Alex Lao received his BEng in Computer Engineering from McMaster University in 2017. Throughout his undergraduate studies he gained experience in FPGA design, robotics and satellite design during his internships at Altera, Intel, Clearpath and Kepler Communications. Truly passionate about the integration of high performance embedded systems in any industry, he is currently working towards a MASc on high performance implementations of power electronic control systems under the supervision of Dr. Nicola Nicolici and Dr. Ali Emadi.
Alex began his pursuit of engineering in high school as a member of his high school’s FIRST robotics team. Later, he joined the McMaster Formula Hybrid team as an electrical designer and embedded software developer in 2014 and 2015. He then transitioned to the McMaster EcoCAR3 team helping develop their hybrid energy storage system and hybrid supervisory controller in 2016 and 2017.
With a strong passion for programming and electronics, Alex always has a side project he is working on. Whether it be a robot or custom graphics processor you can expect to see hand-assembled custom circuit boards and lots of code.
